POCONO SUMMIT, MONROE COUNTY - Pocono Mountain WestHigh Schoolstudents were honored to join Governor Ed Rendell in a video conference Friday. "I think it's a good opportunity," said student Collin Strunk.
The students participated in the discussion with three other schools from across the state. Teacher Kim Kochanski said, "It's a once in a lifetime opportunity for them to be able to talk directly with him and ask questions."
Her American Cultures II class chose Sabrina Fabrizio to represent them. Sabrina smiled, "I think it was a really great opportunity that i got to represent my school and that my voice got to be heard."
She got to ask the governor questions and share ideas. She said, "I was nervous where my heart was racing a little bit. It was kind of scary being up there.'"
Most of the conversation centered on two issues. They were saving the environment and paying for college. Strunk said, "We have to really start thinking about this."
The class had a suggestion for the Governor. It involved reserving some income tax money for college expenses. Sabrina said, "T ake a little bit of it into another bank account so when they leave have to pay for college they can."
The students were happy thegovernortalked with them instead of just talking to them. Kochanski said, "A lot of times the youth of today feels as though they're not an integral party of decisions until they're voting age."
The videoconference proved if young people are willing to participate - the government is willing to listen. | | |
