DUNMORE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY

Students in the Dunmore School District contributed a dollar each Thursday to participate in the second annual "Dress Down Day." The money raised is donated to a local foundation that provides services and support for families dealing with autism.

Student Shane Hennigan began the program in Dunmore. His brother Tom was diagnosed with the neurological disorder when he was two years old. Autism affects behavior and communication skills.

Students raised over $2,000 during "Dress Down Day" last year. This year they are asking for contributions from the business community as well and hope to exceed last year's total.

Shane and Tom's mother Eve says it's not all about the money. She said efforts like "Dress Down Day" raise everyone's awarness of autism and the fact that, as she put it, "These kids have feelings too just like every other kid."
