Sullivan County War Museum

Sullivan County War Museum - Thursday, December 4, 2008 at 3:16PM EST

SONESTOWN, SULLIVAN COUNTY- A unique museum in Sullivan County is about to honor our veterans. And it's happening just in time for Pearl Harbor Day. The Endless Mountains War Memorial Museum in Sonestown is full of many unique, local displays.

From the outside, you can tell the Endless Mountains War Memorial Museum is a special place. But after one glance inside, even the biggest history buff is impressed.

Jack Craft, founder of the Endless Mountains War Memorial Museum says, “Since I was a kid, I was interested in history and I've collected all this stuff. I had it all in storage and you really can't enjoy a collection when its in storage.”

From the Revolutionary War, to present day conflicts, there are thousands of artifacts on display from rare guns, to uniforms, to World War Two telegrams. Most of the pieces have been donated by local families.

Jack adds, “Here you see more personal items and stuff with a name and a face behind it, which really means a lot more.”

Another one of the many highlights of the museum is this 48 Nash. Believe it or not -- it still runs and is taken out every year to many local parades.

Sunday the museum will open its doors for a special Pearl Harbor tribute. One of the unique items that can be seen is this tribute to Williamsport's Joseph Lockard. He was the first to detect enemy planes right before the attack.

Jack mentions that, “He reported this to the superior and unfortunately it was disregarded and they thought it was American aircraft coming in from the mainland."

This year the museum is celebrating its 10th year. With so many items, founder Jack Craft is even using the ceilings. He's even pondering adding on another room. Jack concludes, “It takes people that are really interested a long time to go through it, because there is so many little things you'd miss."

Sunday's special Pearl Harbor tribute will take place between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm. Admission is free. The museum is located on Main Street in Sonestown.
