FRANKLIN TWP., CARBON COUNTY- For many people, Memorial Day is not just about honoring soldiers and veterans. It’s also about a day with family and friends. Because of the nice weather, hundreds of people filled Beltzville State Park in Carbon County.
Let summer unofficially begin. With temperatures in the 70s, hundreds of people hit the water memorial day at Beltzville State Park. Stacy Knowles from Bartonsville said, “The water’s cold, but it’s nice.”
Families packed the park and the beach to celebrate the holiday. Isabel Mejia from Allentown said, “We're gonna be eating, celebrating, maybe throw fireworks in a little bit.”
Elizabeth Jimenez and dozens of her family members came up from Easton to cook out. The bad economy and rising gas prices kept them closer to home. “This is a good place to come. Excellent. Because it’s free,” she said.
Joanna Garcia came up from Philadelphia. It was her first time at Beltzville State Park.
I'm really enjoying the atmosphere. A lot of people. A lot of families having fun here. Something that you don't get too much in the city," she said.
From volleyball to football to playing dominoes or just relaxing, anything goes on a day off from work. Bill Rico from Hazleton said, “We come up and play games. We have a few games in here that we do and come up and cook something. We've been coming here for the last 10-15 years."
Good, cheap fun in a tough economy. The beach at Beltzville State Park will be open until mid-September. Its hours are 8:00 A. M. until sunset. | | |
