Supporters Head to Harrisburg to Save School for the Deaf - Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at 5:45PM EST
HARRISBURG- Students at Scranton State School for the Deaf were in the audience Tuesday morning as Education Secretary Gerald Zahorchak fielded questions from lawmakers about the proposed closing of their school.
Governor Ed Rendell's proposed budget calls for eliminating millions in funding to Scranton State School for the Deaf, forcing it to close.
Zahorchak told the Senate Appropriations Committee the state wants to get out of the business of running schools.
State Senator Lisa Baker from Luzerne County pressed Zahorchak for answers. She asked him if he'd support a senate resolution authorizing a study of the school before any action is taken to close it.
Zahorchak declined to take a position. Senate Majority Leader Bob Mellow from Lackawanna County has previously called for an amendment that would prevent closing the school pending further review. | |
