Suspected School Burglar in Custody

Suspected School Burglar in Custody - Saturday, January 9, 2010 at 11:40PM EST

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY -- Four school burglaries in a week in Wilkes-Barre -- and it's possible the same man may be responsible for all of them. Police say that man is the suspect they arrested a overnight after the latest break-in.

Superintendent Jeff Namey said, "They were here and they got the job done and we're very grateful for that."

Namey has nothing but praise for Wilkes-Barre police. Officers arrested 24-year-old Brandon Sack after they say they spotted him inside G. A.R. High School early Saturday morning.

"There was a lot of damage done last night and this person will be prosecuted aggressively," said Namey.

Police say sack ran from the high school after he realized they were in pursuit. They found him hiding behind a vehicle on nearby Lehigh Street.

Investigators are trying to determine if Sack is the suspect seen in surveillance video of a break-in last Sunday at G. A.R. That's when an intruder swiped hundreds of dollars from soda machines in the building.

That break-in was followed by a burglary Wednesday at Holy Redeemer and another the following day at Meyers High School.

The superintendent knows surveillance cameras in school buildings are a major factor in helping solve crimes. He says the district is stepping up its surveillance efforts.

"We will be getting video capability on the outside of all of our buildings so we're very grateful of that and we believe that will be very, very helpful," added Namey.

And give everyone from students to staff at Wilkes-Barre Area schools a greater sense of security.

Brandon Sack is charged with burglary and criminal trespass stemming only from the Saturday morning break-in so far. He's locked-up at Luzerne County prison.
