Sweet Valley Home Destroyed by Fire - Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at 5:00PM EST

ROSS TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY- A Luzerne County home is in ruins after a late night fire in the Sweet Valley area.
The fire apparently started in the living room of the along the 900-block of Broadway Road. Mervin and Reta Shaw heard smoke detectors and got out. They lived their for nearly 50-years.

The fire chief say the Shaws have given to the community for decades. "Both of the residents help us out at our fundraisers, dinners. The woman in this case is a past president of Sweet Valley Ladies Auxiliary and actually some of her grandchildren are still active volunteers in the fire department, so it kinda hits home," said Sweet Valley Fire Chief Lester Lynn.

The Shaws both needed treatment after breathing in smoke. A state police fire marshal is trying to figure out what caused the fire.
