Williamsport, Lycoming County-

A charitable organization hit hard by fire in Williamsport last year got a helping hand Monday. And it came in a very tasty way with the help of local college students.

Dozens of people attended the second annual Tea Luncheon Benefit at Penn College. The school's culinary students whipped a delicious buffet to help the American Rescue Workers.

A. R.W. men’s shelter director Kevin Carroll said, "It's such a wonderful thing. Such talented young individuals doing this with the culinary arts and we're the recipient of that so it's a great deal."

The Rescue Workers operate a social service center and men's shelter in Williamsport.

Deborah Kordecki and her husband help serve meals there around Christmas and Thanksgiving.

Kordecki, of Cogan Station, noted, "We enjoy being with people. Our family is not here, so for those holidays, we have family when we go there."

Carroll explained, "This money that we're raising is going to help support the shelter. (It's) going to be used to get some kitchen equipment and some other things that we need there to continue to provide there services that we do to the community."

Diners enjoyed some tasty treats and artistic jack-o-lantern displays.

And while the American Rescue Workers reap the financial benefits, students here at Penn College get some real-world practice in their field of study.

Fred Becker, Dean of the School of Hospitality, said, "That's the fun part. It's really a win-win. The students have a chance to gain practical experience through the process, but also we're able to support the community."

And for a charitable organization struck twice by fire last year, every little bit helps.

Carroll added, "If you need somewhere to come serve for the holidays or you want to give a donation to the Rescue Workers, we'll accept that. Because it's going right back into the community to help feed people, to clothe people, to give people a future."
