Technicians Work on Toyota Pedals - Friday, February 5, 2010 at 3:37PM EST

EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY - The techs at Haltermans Toyota in East Stroudsburg have worked on about 150 pedals in the past two days. Dealership owner Jim Halterman said,"There's been a lot of people that have had just been inconvenienced, a lot of people with fear and you know just real concern about driving in the car."

While the problem is big - the fix is actually pretty small. Technicians put a small square of metal in the pedal assembly. The square is smaller than a quarter. They measure a space in the assembly then fill the space with the metal reinforcement bar.

The bar helps change tension in the pedal and helps the internal gears line up better. Halterman said, "It's two or three combined that they're changing and that's what this process does."

Then a tech puts the pedal back in the vehicle and hooks it up to a computer for testing.

Haltermans has at least seven mechanics working on the pedal problem full time. Plus there are three laid off workers on standby for possible returns to work. "We're trying to do everything that we can to get you back on the road," said Halterman.

Techs say the long hours are tough but worth it if their work saves a life. Technician Michael Cisale said, "It feels good that's why we're trying to get them done very quickly."

The dealer said technicians will put reinforcement bars in every recalled pedal but that doesn't mean every pedal was broken. They are just taking extra precautions.
