BLOOMSBURG, COLUMBIA COUNTY -- David Nolte smiled as he left the Columbia County courthouse, after being sentenced to a minimum of five years in state prison. A much different Nolte cried through an apology for causing a wreck that nearly killed Paula Novak in March of last year.

"I think the sentence was fair and appropriate," said Anthony Forray, the Senior Deputy Attorney General. He was overseeing the case due to a conflict with the district attorney's office. "I'm gratified with the judge's decision."

Police say the crash involved Novak was the result of Nolte fleeing police, after an earlier hit-and-run. Investigators say he was driving 100 miles per hour. Judge Thomas A. James, Jr. said to Nolte, "You were hurtling a ton of steel down the road without any regard for other people. "

"I think the judge hit it on the head when he said Nolte was out of control," said Forry. "There was bound to be a devastating situation. Unfortunately, it was Mrs. Novak and four other people. It could've been four or five more people."

The victim's family didn't want to go on-camera but recalled the night of the crash in court, saying Paula Novak was read her last rights. She lived, but suffers from brain damage and ongoing kidney problems.

"The sad thing is, he'll serve five years in prison and then be able to live the rest of his life normally," added Forray. "Mrs. Novak doesn't have that option. She'll continue to suffer."
