TANNERSVILLE - A young woman in the Poconos has been diagnosed with brain cancer. Elizabeth Campanelli is 14 years old and a cheerleader in the Pocono Mountain School District. Elizabeth's best friend is now trying to raise money for her treatment and hope for her family.

When Carissa Campagna and Elizabeth Campenelli were little girls they dreamed of planning each others weddings. "She's gonna be my maid of honor. We already knew that ever since we were like five," said Carissa.

She never imagined she'd be planning a fundraiser to help her friend survive cancer. "She's confused and shocked and scared but I told her it's ok to be scared. She's gonna be ok," said teary eyed Carissa.

Just last week Carissa learned Elizabeth has brain cancer. "It was so out of no where. I was scared," she cried. But then Carissa decided to stop worrying, and start working. Her mother, Christine Harvell, helped her plan a fundraiser, the "Light the Way Home Project."

Harvell said, "As soon as the shock wore off, it was time to get busy doing something that we could be helpful." They are selling luminaries. People will light them on April 11 at Sundown. The family hopes to sell 10,000 luminaries so on the night of the lighting, the porch of every home and business in Tannersville has one. "That would mean everything to me but I think that it would mean more to Elizabeth to know that her whole town is behind her, and thinking of her and supporting her."

Harvell added, "Cancer isn't a death sentence. There's a light of hope."

Luminaries cost a dollar. You can pick them up at the Pocono Township Municipal Building, Friendly's in Tannersville, Dale's Cafe, Miss Margaret's Movement and Dance, or at the Pocono Mountain Jr./Sr. High School.

Carissa is also selling scarves and necklaces. She has already raised more than $300 selling those.
