HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY- More than two dozen teenagers from a Virginia church are doing some mission work in Luzerne County this week. They started with quite a chore -- giving a little league baseball park a makeover.

On a perfect day for baseball, some 30 Virginia teenagers are armed with paint brushes -- and not baseball bats. They're painting Correale Stadium in Hazleton.
The teens and about 10 adult chaperones are all pitching in to help at the little league field. The help comes at the request of Hazleton Community Church -- which asked city officials for a recommended project. The choice was to paint the ballpark bleachers and dugouts.

"It's a big task, but we're just excited to get up here and do this for them," said Pastor Roger Jones of Hillcrest Baptist Church in Virginia.

It took a more than 7-hour bus trip just to get here from Martinsville, Virginia. And the volunteers didn't waste any time getting down to business. Emily Wood said, "It'll probably look like we did a lot more work than we actually felt like we were doing at the time."

The pastor from Martinsville couldn't be more pleased with his youth volunteers and the important faith-sharing lesson they're learning. "It teaches the kids to give to others and to reach out to other people besides themselves and they're excited about coming up here. This is the 3rd year working in Hazleton," said Jones.

Pastor Michael Nerger of Hazleton Community Church said, "It is amazing, it is amazing. When you get about 40 people together just to do one project they just knock it out really fast."

Nerger is thankful he has these faith-based friends who individually is willing to give of themselves for a greater good. "It's really good for the community because we try to stay true to our name, Hazleton Community Church, 'cause we're always trying to do something in the community to benefit the community," he added.

Hazleton community church hopes to return the favor someday and help with a project in Martinsville.

In the meantime, the Virginia visitors will hold backyard bible clubs this Tuesday through Thursday at the James Street and Sheppton playgrounds in Hazleton.
