BRADY TOWNSHIP, LYCOMING COUNTY - A first of its kind training exercise is underway this week in central Pennsylvania. Dozens of first responders from seven counties are getting terrorism training in Lycoming County. They all know a terrorist attack could happen anywhere at any time.
Wednesday's simulation involved several explosions involving C4, dynamite and binary explosives.
"You felt it. You saw it, the heat. The percussion waves that hit you. It's definately an eye opening session here," Michael Engel of the Penn College Police force said.
From small explosions to much bigger ones, Wednesday's exercise was field training and part of a three-day course.
"After sitting in a classroom and hearing us talk about it, it now hits home. When you get to go to the range and feel what a small amount of explosive materials will do," Ryan Morris of Tripwire Operations Group said. Tripwire is the group that put the explosives training together.
EMTs say the simulated car bombings were the most effective because it made them think of the different kinds of injuries they'd face.
"Blast injuries create mass casualty incidents. You have multiple patients, you get different injuries from blast injuries and this was a good cause," Richard Shank said. Shank is a Williamsport paramedic. | |
