Truckers caught texting while behind the wheel now face heavy fines.

New federal guidelines aim to stop commercial truck and bus drivers from sending texts when they're driving

Eyewitness News caught up with trucker Steve Westphal of North Carolina at the Petro Travel Center in Dupont.

Westphal said he deals with it almost every day, including Wednesday afternoon.

"I just came off the road almost got hit by a driver that cut in front of me and i looked over and hit my brakes and he was texting," said Westphal.

New U. S. Department of Transportation guidelines say if a commercial truck or bus driver is caught texting while driving, heavy fines will follow.

The U. S. Department of Transportation says drivers who text are 20 times more likely to get in an accident.

Steven McDonald of Honesdale said, "It can be very scary. I don't even use the phone myself. I use an earpiece and if I need to use the phone I pull over in the safe area and use the phone then."

The Pennsylvania house of representatives passed a similar cell ban while driving

The bill is headed to the senate to be voted on.
