The Inauguration Through the Eyes of Kids
The Inauguration Through the Eyes of Kids - Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at 5:35PM EST
EXETER, LUZERNE COUNTY- Perhaps some of the most impressionable eyes watching the inaugural events are those of young children. Many students across the nation sat in class seeing the historic events unfold. Some elementary students have been planning for this day in their own special way.
They sit and capture the moment through a printed paragraph of this anticipated time in history. But little do these kindergarten students know just how important the meaning will be from now on.
Gianna Colella wrote about the new family in a book she and other classmates at JFK Elementary in Exeter are working on in class. Teacher Jeannie Sviatko said, "I explained to them today that when they're in high school, they will be reading about today in their history books and have to remember first they learned it in kindergarten."
In the same building, 1st graders in Mrs. Switzer's class were also marking the event in a different way. With glue sticks in hand, these students will have a memento to mark the presidency of Barack Obama. From the election to the inauguration process, these 5th graders at 10th Street Elementary are making sure the process is captured in their minds.
Inauguration day carries closure to a project they've been working on for the past few months, starting with a mock election. "So in order to prepare for that I thought it would be important for the children to know the issues that we were coming across."
The students made posters and wrote reports. Finally, topping it off with watching the oaths. 5th grader Ryan Burton said, "It was just very exciting because I was the only one in my family who thought Barack Obama would win."
Their images will be remembered in years to come when they recall this monumental world event, the inauguration of America's 44th Commander in Chief. 5th grader Kelly Clarke said, "It is important to me because he is the first African American president and I am looking forward to him leading our country."
It’s a memorable day that's likely an experience these students will tell time and time again to generations. | |
