There is Still Time to Catch Some Fall Color

There is Still Time to Catch Some Fall Color - Thursday, October 25, 2007 at 3:45PM EST

The fall colors continue to put on a magnificent display. While the rain this week has knocked some of the leaves down, there are many more left on the trees that are just now reaching there peak.

“Pennsylvania doesn’t take a back seat to any New England state as far as color goes.”

Jerry Kelly knows this fact first hand. As the District Forester for the Delaware State forest it’s his offices responsibility to give the weekly assessment on how the foliage is progressing in Pike, Monroe, and Northampton Counties.

“I have 4 foresters in the field. One has that assignment every fall on a weekly basis is to give a visual estimate of what coloration we have. It starts around the first of September and will continue until all the leaves drop” explained Kelly.

Even though by Jerry’s estimate we are just slightly past peek in these areas, we can still expect to see plenty of color in the forest this weekend.

Kelly explains “Right now we have the maples, they are still hanging on. The sugar and red maple. We have Aspen and Ash. The Oaks are still green. The golden color is the Hickories.”

There are several factors that affect the timing and intensity of the foliage color. The amount of rainfall during the growing season plays a part. As does insect activity in the forest.

Kelly said “We had gypsy moth activity this year and in those areas that refoliated with the oak you are going to see that the oak will hang on a little bit longer than normal.”

Jerry said this year there was a trade off. The color was slightly more subtle than usual, but the length of time the color remains on the trees has been extended due to the mid overnight temperatures.

As a result the central areas are seeing from 30% to 100% of color, with the oaks continuing to remain green. This region is peaking this weekend into next week. The hillsides along Route 220 should offer a great drive as Lycoming & Sullivan Counties are reporting 70% of color.

The southern zone is reporting about 50% color with a peak coming towards Halloween.

If you are looking for color across the Northern Tier, take a ride along Route 287 in Tioga County. The oaks quickly reached their peek in this region last weekend, but along with the northern hardwoods they are continuing to hold their leaves.
