ALBRIGHTSVILLE, MONROE COUNTY - As disease steals days away from Michael Benincasa's life, thieves steal money from donations meant to save him. Kerry Benincasa the baby's mother said, "You took life away from him. You took money that goes for his treatments, for his medical supplies, for things that keep him alive.

Kerry said her 19 month old has Spinal Muscular Atrophy. His muscles don't grow on their own and he needs machines to help him breathe. The baby's father Michael said, "We go out of the country for treatment because the treatment is not FDA approved here."

Michael said one treatment and travel to get to it can cost more than $30,000. The family raises the money with donation jars in Pocono businesses. Recently thieves have snatched at least four containers. "I think the economy is in bad shape, people are just grabbing them," said Michael.

While the economy may make some people desperate for cash, Kerry doesn't believe the thieves need the money more than her baby does. She asked, "Is your life being taken? Are you dying right now? Are you struggling to breathe everyday? Do you have to eat through a g tube?"

This week someone stole a jar that was almost full from the Plaza Deli in Scotrun. Deli worker Kathy Ziolkowski said, "That really breaks my heart that someone would do that to that little boy."

As people who came into the deli heard the story, they were touched. They opened their hearts and their wallets. One person donated $50 another wrote a check for $1,000.

Kerry said, "Thank you from the bottom of our hearts and Mikey thanks you very much."

Lots of thanks for giving back what someone stole: The gift of hope and life for little Michael Benincasa.

If you would like to help the family visit for more information.
