Snyder County-

Someone is targeting construction sites in Snyder County. There have been a rash of thefts there in recent weeks, and the thieves know what they’re looking for- copper wire and scrap metal.

Richard Staiman, president of Staiman Recycling in Williamsport, said, "People tend to steal things that they view as having a higher return. It's worth a lot of money so if they steal it they could potentially yield a larger gain from it."

According to State Police at Selinsgrove, the thefts took place at two construction sites in Snyder County over the weekend. One at the future Target store location on Routes 11 and 15 in Monroe Township, the other at the Cole's Hardware site on Route 522 in Franklin Township. In both cases, the bandits made off with reels of copper wire, hand tools, or other scrap metal, totaling thousands of dollars. Thieves target copper wire and scrap metal because of their high resale value.

Police here say they've notified local businesses that purchase scrap metal to be on the lookout for the stolen materials. When demand is high, copper can sell for up to $3.50 per pound. "If you can put 300 pounds of copper wire in your trunk, you could walk out of here with over $1000 conceivably, if it's a legitimate transaction,” Staiman added.

He says there are ways to trace most of the scrap metal and copper wire brought in and adds that his and other reputable scrap yards steer clear of purchasing stolen materials. "We have receipts, documentation, and your license plate number. If you do steal, we will help the authorities catch you," Staiman explained.

Anyone with information on these thefts is asked to contact State Police at Selinsgrove.
