Thousands Flock to Montrose for Blueberry Festival - Friday, August 1, 2008 at 1:38PM EST

MONTROSE, SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY - Friday's heat and humidity didn't stop thousands of people from heading outdoors in Susquehanna County. The village green in Montrose turned blue as the 29th annual Blueberry Festival got underway.

"The thing that is so beautiful about it is that the whole community pulls together. Everything is donated here, from people's time to people's labor," Julanne Skinner said.

As with every festival, there's dancing, games and face painting, but in Montrose the emphasis is on the plump, pleasant blueberry. From ice cream to pies, jams to blueberry pizza, you can get the berries anyway you want.

Matt Baker of Montrose says he likes the blueberry pancakes the best. His friend Erik Burgh was a fan of the blueberry muffins.

While the food and festival is always a lot of fun, it's also an important fundraiser for the Susquehanna County Historical Society and the Free Library Association.

"It's the biggest fundraiser of the year for us. We raised more than $60,000 last year. Every penny of that money goes right back into our operating budget," library association member Sue Stone said.

The Blueberry Festival in downtown Montrose will continue on Saturday from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM. Admission is free.
