SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY

Three people were rescued from a burning home on Birney Avenue in Scranton Monday morning.

The blaze was discovered shortly after 8am. Neighbors found one of the residents, Kevin O'hea, and his girlfriend Michelle Tagliaferri on the roof of the front porch. A man driving a truck from a tree trimming truck backed up to the house and the two jumped to safety. The woman told rescuers her son was in a back bedroom. Neighbors spotted him on the roof of the back porch. One of them, Kevin Browning, grabbed a ladder from his house and helped the young man, Anthony Salerno to safety.

City firefighters had to contend with flames, heavy smoke, and temperatures in the 90's. The Red Cross and neighbors brought water and ice to the scene to help the firefighters as they battled the blaze.

A pet cat escaped the fire but the family's pet dog did not.

There's no word on the cause of the blaze. The fire department is asking anyone with information about the tree trimming agent who stopped to help to contact them.
