Danville, Montour County-

The next week is shaping up to be a scorcher weather-wise. The extreme temperatures can become dangerous in a hurry.

Organizers are shaping up for summer athletic camps at Geisinger in Danville. The camps start June 16th and are designed to provide off-season conditioning to 7th grade through college level athletes.

But with the mercury rising into the mid-90's over the next several days on thermometers throughout the area, precautions are being taken here to ensure everyone's safety. Orthopedic Surgeon Glen Feltham explained, "First of all try to stay as cool as possible, stay out of the sun whenever possible, and the next thing would be to hydrate themselves and drink more than they think they need to drink."

Health experts recommend avoiding highly caffeinated and carbonated drinks such as coffee and soda, instead choosing sports drinks or good old H2O. Geisinger Sports Medicine Program Manager Jason Jarinko noted, "The best thing to do is stay hydrated throughout the day when you know you're going to be outside in the heat."

The message is twice as important for those who may not be in the best of health. People who are overweight, have breathing problems or cardiovascular conditions, as well as the elderly must be extra careful to avoid overexposure to the sun. "They say the peak times are between 10AM and 3PM, so it's best to stay indoors if you're sensitive to heat during that time," Jarinko added.

We caught up with Brian Kennedy, a Montoursville man in his sixties, who got his exercise in early before the sun got too harsh. He also has a tip. "Just stay as young, for as long as you possibly can," Kennedy said, laughing.

And of course, one last tip, don’t forget the sunblock. So whether you're training for a sport, working at home, or just relaxing by the pool-- stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay healthy.
