Town Proud - Milford

Incorporated in 1874 - Milford borough originally had it streets laid out by John Biddis in 1796 - leaving an interesting legacy for his family and himself.

Danielle Jordan of the Pike County Chamber says, “There are a lot of interesting street names in Milford. In the late 1700's John Biddis laid out the town of Milford. He named most of the streets after his children. Such as Ann, Srash, Elizabeth, George and John. Or after his favorite fruits.”

And much like a fruit - Milford is filled with plenty of seeds- as seeds of history are spread throughout the community.

Danielle told us, “the town of Milford is a historic village - and ad you drive through you can see all the different types of architecture that are here.”

Barbara Buchanan of the columns museum had this to say, “Jen Gourlay who was an actress on stage during "my American Cousin" - her father was the stage manager at the time Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth, Mr. Gourlay grabbed the flag and put it under the president head.”

Members of the "Gourlay" family kept the flag until donating it to the columns museum in 1954. The blood has been independently confirmed to be Abraham Lincolns - and Milford considers the artifact nothing short of an American treasure.

Barbara says, “if one thinks about it - it actually belongs to the government. But thankfully the government hasn't come to get it.”

And while the government may not get the flag in their sights you can - with a visit to Milford - a community that has many reasons to be town proud.
