PITTSTON TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY -- A troubled train trestle has led to a road closure in Pittston Township.
Market Street is closed underneath a Reading and Northern Railroad train trestle. Since our story last week, Pittston Township says conditions around the tracks have worsened.
The township closed Market Street early Tuesday morning. Zoning Officer Terry Best said if it wasn't closed, falling debris could have caused costly car damage. "We're concerned for the citizens up in the area is what it comes down to. I don't think that they have to be worried about driving under this overpass and ending up with a problem with a rock on the windshield," he said.
Best and Township Supervisor Stephen Rinaldi say the trestle needs to be rebuilt and widened to allow emergency vehicles through.
Reading and Northern Railroad owns the trestle. Best says the township solicitor is in contact with the company.
A Reading and Northern inspector was on scene Tuesday morning. That inspector did not say if repairs are scheduled.
People living next to the trestle will have to exit their neighborhood over a train track crossing on Broad Street. The township solicitor has also contacted the Public Utility Commission in hopes of finding a solution. | |
