SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- Officials at Catholic Social Services in Scranton say they have had 422 more requests for help from the Toys For Tots program that they had last year. The agency, which works with the U. S. Marine Corps to gather toys for low income families for Christmas, expects to serve 1650 children this year.

Its offices in Wyoming Valley, Carbondale, and Hazleton are also dealing with more registrations this year than ever before.

But while registrations are up donations are down. Agency officials believe that's a result of the general economic conditions throughout the country.

The toys are scheduled to be distributed on December 19th so its hoped that additional donations will come in before that time. Toys For Tots collection boxes are set up in stores and malls throughout the area.
