Deadly traffic accidents across the country are headed to the lowest total since 1961. That's what a recent study at the Univeristy of Michigan shows.
This year alone, 32 fatal accidents have happened in a section of our area. That's for Lackawanna, Wayne, Pike, and Susquehanna counties.
That's one reason a safety stop was placed in Wayne County this afternoon. Troopers told drivers to keep it safe on the roads this Labor Day holiday.
They're targeting motorcycle safety. They passed out pamphlets and safety stickers to people like Guy Small, who says its' a good move. Small says, "Some people don't respect people on motorcycles. I could be driving up and they'll just, right in. And I'll make sure my lights are on, I don't drive near blind spots."
Across the county, DUI motorcycle accident deaths are up. That's one reason for this safety stop. But total traffic accident deaths are down.
Experts say it's because high gas prices are keeping drivers off the road. Alicia Phillips of Narrowsburg, New York says, "I think that that's true that a lot less people are on the road because of gas prices. Because I know I can't go anywhere as much. "
Another theory is people are driving more safely to save gas. Some disagree with that. Jimmy Nowinski of Honesdale says, “I find that hard to believe that the level had gone down. Especially more traffic on the road now. And more people on the cell phone."
But a recent study shows the stats. Traffic deaths could be headed to their lowest total since the 60's. | | |
