Traffic Light Concerns After Fiery Crash

Traffic Light Concerns After Fiery Crash - Monday, May 11, 2009 at 5:45PM EST

ASHLEY, LUZERNE COUNTY- An Ashley business says a deadly crash could have been prevented. That's what a Bentley’s Plaza ownership says after a man couldn't be saved from his fiery car. We have to warn you - the video is graphic.
Craig Lear of Mountain Top died on Route 309 in front of Bentley's Plaza Sunday. He was headed to a car show. Bentley's ownership says a traffic light is needed badly at the plaza entrance.

Sunday’s car show was the first event at the plaza's banquet facility. Bentley's Entertainment Director Pete Carver says, "Is it going to take something like this, is it going to take another death to get anything done? It's just terrible."

Lear's car was rear ended by an SUV Sunday as he turned into Bentley's Plaza off Route 309. "Our thought now is to keep petitioning to do everything we can do to bring the community, the public to get a traffic light there, some rumble strips, something to slow these people down," says Carver.

PennDOT says that's not out of the question. They say the road that turns into Bentley's from Route 309 is maintained by the borough. Deciding on a traffic light here will be between the borough, PennDOT and the owners of Bentley's. Carver says Bentley's ownership has offered to pay for a traffic light. "It's just been a back and forth situation and a typical bureaucracy and politic rhetoric and it's unfortunate," says Carver.

PennDOT and the Ashley Borough Police Chief say there's a meeting scheduled with Bentley's management this month. It's possible all three groups could decide on the traffic light at that meeting.

The driver of the SUV that collided with Lear was 77-year-old Jean Herron of Mountain Top. She's in critical condition at Geisinger Wyoming Valley.
