Train Derails in Scranton

Train Derails in Scranton - Monday, March 9, 2009 at 8:40PM EST

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - A train with 43 cars derailed in Scranton Monday. Some of the cars slipped off the tracks near Main Avenue just before noon. No one was hurt but it caused a huge mess.
Chelsea McCall of Scranton said, "It's crazy. Never saw anything like that."

McCall and dozens of other people stopped to see the mess of train cars jamming the tracks. "I just never saw anything so crazy. I don't even know how it fell off," she said.

Investigators are still trying to figure out exactly what happened there. A part of the track looks broken where four train cars slipped off and flipped over.

Scranton Fire Department Assistant Chief Jim Floryshak said, "There's probably another five or six cars that have left the rails or left that track that are still upright."

The train was headed from Binghamton New York to Harrisburg. The damaged train compartments were carrying lumber and cars.

Floryshak said it could have been much worse. Two of the train cars were carrying hazardous materials. The did not come off the tracks or leak at all. He also said it's a good thing the cars fell the way they did. He explained, "There's a pretty good embankment there that leads down to the expressway so it could've been a different story."

A Canadian Company owns the train. Officials from that company will come from Montreal to try to figure out what happened. It could take several days to clear the train from the tracks. Police say they will arrest anyone found trespassing on them.
