Travel Up, Gas Prices Down for Memorial Day Weekend

Travel Up, Gas Prices Down for Memorial Day Weekend - Friday, May 28, 2010 at 04:13AM EST

The Memorial Day holiday weekend is officially underway. And millions are hitting the road. AAA says 32 million Americans will take a trip away from home between now and Memorial Day.

Summer driving holidays are usually a time when we see a spike in gasoline prices. But that's not the case this year. In fact prices have actually gone down.

In Drums, Luzerne County, Interstate 81 southbound was moving slowly Friday afternoon. It was due to a long-term PennDOT construction project coupled with holiday traffic.

And safety breaks are set up across the interstates for drivers looking to take a little breather from the road. Many community and service groups are offering coffee and snacks at rest stops on Interstate 80 and 81.

They'll be there through Monday. We found members of the Dorrance Volunteer Fire Department busy at the Nuangola rest stop on I-81 northbound.
