SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - “When you come to my aerobics class, you come in to a party," said Zumba instructor, Colleen Harrington.
Zumba is a new fitness phenomenon that began in Colombia and is now one of the most popular workouts across America's biggest cities.
The exercise, which combines Latin American dance moves with aerobics started as a quick fix for an aerobics instructor.
“One day he forgot his music for step class, so he grabbed his tapes in the car. They were salsa and brought it in and just went with it," Harrington explained.
"So many people come and say ‘I can't dance, but I love to anyway.’ Some of the things people do they say, ‘I didn’t know I could shake my hips like that’, but it's wonderful," Harrington added.
And it’s rewarding. Participants say it's an enjoyable way to get in great shape.
“I never go to the gym because it's too boring. I love Zumba because it's fresh and fun," says participant, Katie Hengler.
"Actually, I'm the only other guy besides the instructor, so I guess that's a benefit," says participant Jack Harrington.
And instructors promise, you'll get toned and become more flexible, too.
Classes are held Monday through Thursday, from 4-5 p.m. and 6-7 p.m. at the center at 2601 Birney Ave. in Scranton.
