Scranton, Lackawanna County

A day-long tribute to civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King began at the University of Scranton on Monday.

More than 200 people, many of them children from area housing projects. turned out from a program of tributes and song at the university. Friends of the Poor, a service organization offering aid to low income families, sponsors the annual event which includes at evening march from the offices of United Neighborhood Centers to the Lackawanna County Courthouse.

Many of those participating say this year's event was extra special since it coincides with the inauguration of President Barack Obama as the nation's first black chief executive.
