SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- It's cold, wet and wintry outside, but instead of sleeping in, these University Of Scranton students have dozens of deliveries to make.
The kids have already raised more than $4,000.00 to donate about 175 thanksgiving bags to the less fortunate.
Junior Melissa Slavowski helped organize the school's third annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. Slavowski said, "As a freshman I came in and it was such an amazing program to see the outcome and families given thanksgiving dinners they normally wouldn't get."
So the students stocked their cars and grabbed their assignments before heading to local homes and charities. Each family received two paper bags, filled with a turkey, pumpkin pie, potatoes, stuffing and all the Thanksgiving trimmings.
The first stop for Seniors Kelly Sullivan and Brittany Bobinski is Monroe Avenue. No luck at the first home, so they leave a note behind. With their hands full of goodies the young women have better luck here at their second stop.
Kelly Sullivan greeted each recipient, "We're here from the University Of Scranton with Thanksgiving food baskets." A young man shyly answers the door and lets the ladies in. Soon, the girls were off ready for one more drop off down the street. Kelly said, "Hi, how are you doing we're here for your gift baskets."
This year Kevin Phillips and his family are on the receiving end. Phillips added, "We won't be hungry. We'll be full so it'll make us all happy. The University is doing something for us and the community."
For both seniors it's one lesson they'd never learn in a classroom. Brittany Bobinski, "I was just really overwhelmed listening to him. It's a good feeling to give back to the community where I go to school."
Senior Kelly Sullivan added, "I'm actually really sad we didn't get to do this before. It's just so nice to give back and see how happy you make people.”
Students can use this community service toward their school service hours. They say the programs keeps growing and growing.
