HAZLE TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY -- A massive fire broke out around 4:00 this morning in the Milnesville part of Hazle Township. Two businesses in the building were destroyed. That building had a long history in the area.

Over 20 fire tankers from three counties couldn't save it. The building was home to the Lazy Dog Salon and Peirucci Home Decor.

Francis Peirucci rushed to his store to find smoke billowing out the roof. "I got a call about 4:00 in the morning from someone, from the neighbor who said your building’s on fire. So I came rushing over, and it was already pretty much up in flames," he said.

Peirucci says the building was insured but the items inside were not. Fire crews had their hands full. It was tough getting water to the site.

The fear was that the fire would spread to neighboring homes. Rene Disadella lives right next door and describes what she see saw Monday morning. "I picked up the phone, dialed 9-1-1 and just seen this sea of orange going across my house. I grabbed the dog got in the truck and left," she said.

Firefighters were able to save Disadella's house. It only got some minor smoke damage. They also rescued a cat from inside.

Mary Ann Reich also lives near the fire. Her husband's family owned the building until it was sold 5 years ago. "There's a lot of sadness. It was a fine building. There's a huge safe in there. It was a taxidermist for many years," she said.

The building was also a post office and before that a general store. While a peace of history was lost Monday, at least one neighbor is thanking firefighters for making sure her house still has a future.

"They did such a wonderful job. I mean look how close my house is to this building, and there is nothing wrong with it other than some smoke inside and the smell that’s it, I can't thank them enough. I can't," she added.
