Two Dead After Suspected Murder-Suicide in Pottsville

Two Dead After Suspected Murder-Suicide in Pottsville - Sunday, February 8, 2009 at 11:33PM EST

POTTSVILLE, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY- Pottsville Police were called to a home in the 1900 block of Howard Avenue just before 9:00 A. M. Sunday. That's where one man was found dead and a woman critically hurt. That woman died at the hospital. Neighbors believe it was a murder-suicide.
People living along Howard Avenue in Pottsville are in disbelief after a shooting at their neighbor's home. Lindsay Trout didn't hear the gun shots just before 9:00 A. M., but her dog knew something was wrong. "She was tapping at the door to get outside, and when we let her out she was just barking non-stop, something we weren't used to hearing," she said.

And when they went outside -- they saw something they're not used to seeing. "I was shocked when I saw the cops out here with guns drawn, living here my whole life and I was shocked," she added.

Neighbors tell Eyewitness News Jeff and Amy Williams lived here with their two elementary school-aged sons. They tell us Jeff shot his wife, then killed himself. Neighbor Marla Terefencko said, "I never would have thought it with this family, they're very nice, I've known them for a long time"

Neighbors say the two sons weren't home at the time of the shooting. One was staying at a friend's house, and other with a relative right across the street. "Two young boys, always saw them out together playing, always happy," added Trout.

"My heart breaks for them, they were great kids, very happy, nice kids. They were a very happy family, they seemed to be," said Terefencko.

Police say the woman was taken via life flight helicopter for surgery at Lehigh Valley Medical Center, where neighbors tell us Amy was a trauma center nurse. She died at the hospital.

Both women say it'll take some time for things to get back to normal in this neighborhood.
