Two Dead in East Stroudsburg House Fire - Thursday, November 8, 2007 at 12:00PM EST

EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY- Two people were killed in a fire Thursday morning in Monroe County. It happened at a double block home on Analomink Street in East Stroudsburg at about nine.

One side was home to a family, the other to a group of East Stroudsburg University students. One fire victim was a guest of the family. She is a 25 year old woman from Marshall’s Creek. At this time police have not released her name.

The identity of the second victim also has not been released. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

While the community mourns those deaths many said it could have been much worse. Some fast acting neighbors saved three people from the burning building.

A family and a group of college students were inside of the two family home when it went up in flames at about nine Thursday morning.

"I saw flames bursting out the side window and I knew that there was a serious problem." Tom Davis lives on Analomink Street just across from the fire. The sound of screaming woke him up. When he ran outside he saw two small children on a porch yelling for help.

"I'm just happy that I realized the screaming was just not play and they were in trouble" Davis declared.

Tom ran across the street and took the children from the porch to a neighbor's house. Then he noticed a man trapped on the burning roof.

Steve Randall was driving by, he also saw the fire victim. The two teamed up and found a ladder to rescue the man on the roof.

"I was running with the ladder so fast that I was slipping up the hill because I had bedroom shoes on and I couldn't even make traction. We were running as fast as we could" explained Davis.

East Stroudsburg Fire Chief Billy Miller said the man might not have survived without Davis and Randall. He however does not recommend anyone try to save people in fires because they could become victims themselves. He explained "They are good men for doing it, but sometimes you don't want to put yourself in harms way."

Randall and Davis barely thought about the possible harm, they just did what they thought was right.

"I did I think what anybody else would have done. It was obvious the people were in big trouble. I'm just glad I could do what I could do to help" declared Randall.
