Gamble Township, Lycoming County-
Another case of dog abuse is being reported in our area. This time it's in Lycoming County.
Authorities say two dozen dogs were neglected at a trailer home in Gamble Township. Many were kept outdoors, penned up in wooden enclosures.
A search warrant lists the owner as Janice Krauss. We're told she also owns a home near Lancaster.
Now, workers at the Lycoming County SPCA have their hands full caring for these little guys and girls.
Executive Director Vickie Stryker explained, "They had hair loss from flea bites. They have overgrown nails, some that were bleeding because they caught on things. And there's probably some inbreeding too, because there's so many that aren't fixed."
Some of the dogs- mostly dachshunds, chihuahuas, and terriers- also have skin conditions and hip problems.
Stryker noted, "It's very sad for the animals and I don't know why people don't look out and ask for help."
The dog's owner must release them into SPCA care before they can be adopted. If she refuses, officials here say they will seek a court order forcing her to do so.
Stryker added, "Hopefully she'll do the right thing and release them to us so we can find good homes for them."
Animal cruelty charges are expected to be filed against Krauss in the coming weeks. Attempts to contact her were unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, anyone interested in adopting one of these little guys or girls can fill out an application in advance with the Lycoming County SPCA.
SPCA officials are also seeking donations for blankets and vet expenses. If you'd like to help, give them a call at 570-322-4646.
