SUMMIT STATION, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY- The Schuylkill County fairgrounds will serve as a temporary home for 15 horses, two goats and two dogs after the Hillside SPCA rescued the animals earlier Tuesday in what's called a horrible case of animal abuse and neglect.
Described as dangerous conditions, the SPCA had a search warrant available to rescue the animals, but officials said it wasn't necessary since the unidentified farm owner cooperated with the removal of the animals.
All of the horses have what's known as rain rot, a condition where the hair is caked and dried out with manure. One horse had a gaping wound. Volunteers tending to the animals said hopes were dim for that horse.
The case is being reviewed by an assistant district attorney, according to the SPCA.
A veterinarian will visit the animals this morning to determine treatment. The Hillside SPCA is footing the bill for care and treatment.
