Two Troopers Shot in Pocono Shootout, Suspect Dead - Sunday, June 7, 2009 at 11:30PM EST

COOLBAUGH TWP., MONROE COUNTY- Two Pennsylvania State Troopers from the Swiftwater barracks were shot and seriously injured when a high speed chase ended with a crash and shootout. The suspect was shot and killed.
The shootout happened on Route 611 in Tobyhanna near the intersection with Route 423 around 8:30 P. M. The two troopers were taken by lifeflight helicopter to separate hospitals. One was flown to Scranton CMC and the other was taken to Lehigh Valley. Police are gathering at both hospitals to show their support.

Police from at least five area agencies were involved in the incident, which began in Northampton County and ended in Coolbaugh Township. Right now Route 611 is closed from Route 423 to I-380.

Eyewitness News has learned the ordeal began in Nazareth, Northampton County when police were called to enforce a P. F.A., or Protection From Abuse order.

That's when the suspect took a 10-year-old at gunpoint and led police on a high speed chase into along Route 191 into Monroe County. Stroud Area Regional Police joined the pursuit until it was taken over by State Police and Pocono Mountain Regional Police. The chase ended on Route 611 near Route 423 and shots were fired.

The suspect was shot and killed, but not before two troopers were shot. Investigators confirm both troopers are from the Swiftwater barracks in the Poconos. The Pocono Mountain Regional Police Chief told Eyewitness News that both troopers are outsanding officers and good friends of his.
