United Hebrew Institute Moving After 50 Years

United Hebrew Institute Moving After 50 Years - Monday, June 14, 2010 at 04:16AM EST

KINGSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY -- After 50 years the United Hebrew Institute will be moving from Kingston. The private Jewish school is relocating to Wilkes-Barre. The reason for the move is part of a bigger problem which has become a growing trend.

The school's relocating about a mile away to Wilkes-Barre, but teachers here say that's millions of miles away emotionally. Longtime teacher Sandy Himelstein said, "We all have a lot of memories, mostly good ones."

Now those memories will have a new address: The Jewish Community Center on River Street. Administration at the United Hebrew Institute, or UHI, says this building became too costly to maintain. Declining enrollment in a tough economy lead to the decision.

Despite the move, longtime UHI teacher Sandy Himelstein says the school won't skip a beat. "We have a lot of youngsters who went through this building who are now grownups and part of the community. but the building isn't the school, the people are the school," said Himelstein.

60 students are enrolled at UHI. On the last day of classes, principal, Rabbi Raphael Nemetsky had a message to students. "We told them that the strength of the school is not in mortar, not in bricks, it's in the teachers and the curriculum and that will remain the same, if not enhanced. we also pointed out when you have lemons, you make lemonade and there's more advantages that the jcc will be able to afford us," said Nemetsky.

This won't be the first time UHI has used the JCC for classes. During the Agnes Flood, it had to use this facility for one year because of flood damage. Now it appears the move will be permanent keeping a school alive despite tough times.

United Hebrew Institute says there's no immediate plans for the Kingston building after the move.
