United Voices Against Domestic Violence

United Voices Against Domestic Violence - Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at 10:55PM EST

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- About 100 people took part in a Crime Victims Rights March and Rally outside the Victims Resource Center in Wilkes-Barre.
Students from area college and universities mingled with Wilkes-Barre residents to unite in one voice against violence.

"We work with our college community very closely and try to raise awareness and get them interested in the issues because prevention is important and college students are the key," notes Janet Mackay of the Victims Resource Center.

One university well represented was Wilkes. 31-year-old Kewaii Rogers-Buckner was a nursing student there. She was killed late last month at her home where she was with her three children. Her husband was charged in her death.

Jacquel Mapp is a friend of Rogers-Buckner she asked victims of domestic violence to get out of the situation they are in and seek a safe place. "I just wish she got out but she said she was safe. My plea is to anybody who thinks they're safe please get out because not everybody does," she said.

A candlelight vigil was held on campus in Rogers-Buckner's memory.. a testimony not only to her spirit but to the impact her death has had on this campus - and the impact domestic violence can have on the region.
