SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - A new project unveiled Thursday morning in Lackawanna County promises to change the landscape of Scranton's Hill Section.

The University of Scranton announced plans to build a $33 million dollar residence hall on Mulberry Street.

The new facility would be built in the 900-block of Mulberry Street. It would provide housing for 400 more students and contain fitness space and a dining area.

"I'm looking forward to it," senior Dennis Monaghan said. "Even though I'm a graduating senior, I'd like to come back to Scranton in two or three years to see how the campus has changed."

School officials still have to get approvals from three Scranton boards. If all goes according to plan, construction could begin this summer.

"We definately needed the athletic space because everyone talks about how you go into the Murray-Royal Room right now and you're waiting a half-hour to get a machine," senior Scott Melideo said.

While many students are thrilled, the news is a little different for Patty Petroziello and her business the Aroma Cafe. They will be forced out by the project.

"We've been very, very happy here, so its unfortunate," Petroziello said.

The Aroma Cafe has been around for three years and workers say they've enjoyed serving university students and staff.

"There's no locations anywhere near the university that the shop could possibly move to," Petroziello said.

University leaders say besides adding more beds, the new facility will help develop a campus community while beautifying the Mulberry Street corridor.

"We have a significant number of juniors and seniors who decide to move off campus and we want to see if we can get them to come back to campus," Vice President of Student Affairs Vincent Carilli said.

Construction on the new residence hall could be finished by the fall of 2011.
