Vandals Target Empty Churches - Monday, June 14, 2010 at 04:17AM EST

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY -- Churches emptied because of consolidations are being targeted. Within the past two weeks, two catholic churches were robbed and one was also vandalized.

At Holy Trinity in Wilkes-Barre, it was grafitti on the church garage. At St. Joseph's in Wilkes-Barre Township, a stolen refrigerator.

These churches seem to be targeted after they closed through consolidation. Father John Terry of Our Lady of Hope said, "We prayed for the people who did these things, whoever they may be. We pray for them because it's kind of a sorry thing when people actually come into a church and take items that really are not theirs."

Father Terry presides over Our Lady of Hope, a new church formed after Holy Trinity, St. Josephs, and St. Mary's of the Maternity merged. He says a copying machine and snow blower were also stolen from Holy Trinity. In St. Josephs someone even stole a statue of the virgin Mary.

Parishoners can't believe it. Corinne Bonk of Laurel Run said, "You would think that because the way people's circumstances are now, a lot of people don't have jobs right now, people would turn to their church for a little bit of faith and things will get better."

Father Terry says there were no signs of forced entry in both churches. He says, for the most part, all doors in the churches are locked. Father Terry tells us nothing has been stolen from Our Lady of Hope.
