Veteran's Home Crosses Major Hurdle
Veteran's Home Crosses Major Hurdle - Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 12:18PM EST
KINGTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY-The people behind plans to build a veterans home say drug and alcohol abusers won't be living there. Instead, honorably discharged veterans will move in.
And it'll mean new life for a closed-down church and school.
"This is going to be a life-long opportunity for St. Hedwigs to live and continue to serve the people of the community." says Msgr. Joseph Kelly, the Secretary for Human Services.
Kingston's zoning hearing board gave Catholic Social services a green light for 30 apartments for veterans and their families.
While most of St. Hedwig's actually sits in Kingston.
Some of it sits in Edwardsville and that means this plan had to go in front of Edwardsville's board too.
The plan initially caught opposition from some in the neighborhood...
Only this man said he was still concerned, claiming substance abusers would settle in.
Supporter Sam Greenberg disagrees.
" I took umbrance to the fact he was in essence saying every veteran that comes out today is a druggie or alcoholic and even that, it's not true."
Kingston's board will require the facility to have an on-site supervisor 24-7...
And it'll have to adopt a zero-tolerance policy for residents. | |
