Veterans Honored all Over the Area

Veterans Honored all Over the Area - Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at 5:00PM EST

Slowly but surely Old Glory was raised at the Wyoming Cemetery Tuesday morning. More than 50 people gathered to remember and honor World War I veterans.

With flags in hand, people marked the 90th anniversary of the end of that conflict. In Lackawanna County on the new Veterans Plaza in Scranton, a 50-year Veterans Day tradition continued. More than 100 people turned out to honor our soldiers, past and present, and lay a wreathe.

Scranton Veteran Don Knight said, “It shows them that there's people out here who care about them and where they are and what they're doing and we want them all home safe."

Up the line in Mayfield the borough was decked out in red, white and blue. Members of the lions club decorate every utility pole to honor and pay tribute. Randy Horhutz said, "I think we have a habit of remembering the people only while they're fighting for our country. And then, after it’s all over, I think it's very easy to forget what they have done."

Never forgetting was also the motto for students at Luzerne County Community College. Dozens gathered in the school's rotunda to honor student soldiers. The school currently has more than 90 students involved in the military.

Erin Roe, an Iraqi Veteran and LCCC student, said, "I never thought six years ago that I'd be a veteran. It wasn't something that I was sitting there and saying "Veterans Day" -- one day is gonna be -- but it’s a great honor to honor everyone in the military."
