HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY -- A memorial unveiled outside the Hazleton Elks honors veterans and fallen heroes, including LCpl Dante Pontry.
His mother, Mary Ann, told us she was nervous when her son enlisted in the Marines while still in high school.
"But you know what, when he graduated boot camp, I was the proudest mother ever," she said. Dante was killed five years later in 1990, in the Middle East.
The Hazleton Elks are involved with veterans affairs and built the memorial in their honor. Families at Sunday's service also received awards for their loved ones killed in action.
Family and friends can purchase bricks to be placed at the memorial, in honor of loved ones, whether or not they're military personnel.
"It's beautiful," said Pontry. '"I just love it. I'm so proud of it and to have his name represented here."
If you'd like more information on purchasing a brick at the memorial, you can contact the Hazleton Elks located at 635 E. Broad Street. The number is 454-3901. | |
