Veterans Village Planned for St. Hedwig's Property

Veterans Village Planned for St. Hedwig's Property - Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at 5:30PM EST

KINGSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY- A proposed plan could breathe new life into a closed church. Catholic Social Services wants to build onto St. Hedwig's in Kingston. The church and its school closed in 2007.
Turning closed church buildings into a veterans village - that's what Catholic Social Services is proposing for the St. Hedwig's property in Kingston and Edwardsvile.

Charlie Luce of VFW Post 283 said, "Nobody wanted to see St. Hedwig's close, but the community, the church community wants to see St. Hedwig's used for a purpose."

Luce is one of many veterans supporting the project. It includes 30 apartments for veterans and their families.

9 will be handicapped equipped for physically or mentally disabled vets. Eligibility will be based on financial need.

Some neighbors are questioning the project. Rush Inn owner Barbara Rush said, "What I'm concerned about is what type of facility is this actually going to be because I'm a nurse and to me it sounds like it's almost going to be an assisted living facility."

Catholic Social Services says Veterans Village won't offer drug or alcohol treatment. It also says the village also won't be considered transitional or emergency housing.

Catholic Social Services wants to include the history of St. Hedwig's into this Veterans Village, so it's likely this whole front facade of the church will remain intact.

The rest of the village diagrams were displayed at planning commission and zoning board meetings. The zoning board delayed a vote to get more information for concerned neighbors.

Some vets stand behind the project. Sam Greenberg said, "It's for the veterans and the veteran's families. Non-gender, non-religious, whatever it is and the V. A. will screen these people to make sure the right people are in."

The price of the project is about $10-million. Catholic Social Services hopes it will be paid for by federal, state and local grants.

The Veterans Village plan was unanimously passed at Kingston's Planning Commission meeting Tuesday night. The Kingston Zoning Board will delay its decision until a meeting next month.
