Veterans’ Voices debuted on Eyewitness News Thursday night. Each month, Eyewitness News reporter Mike Trim will profile a local veteran and tell their story.

Mike served four years in the United States navy aboard the USS McFaul. The McFaul is a guided missile destroyer docked out of Norfolk , Virgina.

Before he hit the decks of his ship, he began his journey like every other sailor; in basic training in Great Lakes , llinois. He went to schooling for 12 weeks after boot camp and learned how to be a radioman. He was then given orders to the USS McFaul. At 500 feet long and weighing in at 2,000 tons, the McFaul features some heavy firepower.

Armed with tomahawk missiles, a 5" caliber gun and a crew of more than 300 sailors. In 1999, he was on the McFaul's first deployment. The ship sailed 6 months in the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas.

During the deployment he visited the pyramids in Egypt , the Eifel tower in Paris , leaning tower of Pisa , roman ruins, and the watery streets of Venice in Italy . Military service runs in Mike’s family. His great grandfather was a Navy veteran. His grandfather served with the Army in World War II.

The next Veterans’ Voices story will run in early July. Mike is looking for veterans to participate in this series. If you know a veteran that would like to tell their story through pictures and an interview, e-mail Mike at
