Vietnam Wall Memorial Opens in Wayne County

Vietnam Wall Memorial Opens in Wayne County - Thursday, May 28, 2009 at 6:29PM EST

HAWLEY, WAYNE COUNTY - A small Wayne County community has swelled in size this week. That's because the American Veterans Traveling Tribute opened to the public Thursday afternoon in Hawley. Its located in Bingham Park.
Hundreds of people paused to remember those killed.

"It gives me chills. It's just like the original down in Washington," Jack Sanders of Hawley said.

Some knelt, other prayed, but everyone had a reason for coming out.

"It means a lot. I could never bring myself to go to Washington. I was always scared how I was gonna react because I have a lot of friends that are on that wall," Francis Powll said. Powll served in Vietnam.

Audrey Seidensticker Wollman lost her brother James in Vietnam.

"It's almost like it happened yesterday. You don't ever forget. You move on, but you don't forget," Seidenstricker Wollman said.

The traveling wall is 380 feet long. It's the largest of four replicas that travels the country to honor, respect and remember our American warriors.

"It's something that will never leave you. It'll always be part of you," William Maack said.

The tribute will be on display until Monday morning. Its open 24 hours a day. It is free to the public.
