Visit of Pope Benedict XVI - Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at 6:53PM EST

WILKES-BARRE -- Roman Catholics are excited by the Pope's visit to the U-S but issues regarding church attendance, past abuse scandals and a shortage of priests are among the issues causing some uncertainty among his flock.

A February study by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life shows that of only 55% of Catholics say they practice their religion. There are differing opinions as to why, and some are wondering if Pope Benedict will address some of the issues that have proven divisive. Some Catholics have openly disagreed over birth control, the role of women in the church, and homosexuality among other pressing items.

The Pope is slated to speak with President Bush, Catholic Educators, and the UN during this visit and there is much speculation on the issues he may address.

WYOU Interactive discusses the importance and the issues surrounding Pope Benedict the XVI's visit with Professor of Theology Dr. James Brian Benestad and Sister Gilmary Speirs from Marywood University.
