Volunteers Help During National Volunteer Week - Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 04:08AM EST

EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY- It's National Volunteer Week and people in Northeastern Pennsylvania are getting into the spirit of giving. Employees from the Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania Volunteer Program, The Caring Corps, are rolling up their sleeves.

Elise Cairns traded her usual business suit for jeans and a tee. She smiled,"I am stocking bags and boxes to be distributed to the needy this week."

She volunteered at the East Stroudsburg Salvation Army. She said, "I just want to be there for them and i know if I am in need they will be there for me."

Elise usually spends her days behind a desk. She's an Account Support Representative for Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania.
But her company allowed her and her fellow employees to take a paid day off to help. She said, "Blue Cross really supports us, wants us to come out and make a difference in the communities that we serve."

The volunteers packed food for 220 families in Monroe County. Lewann Stewart, a regular Salvation Army Volunteer said,"A lot of them are grateful. Without us they probably wouldn't have a meal."

Lewann knows first hand. She used to need the food pantry to feed her children. She said,"They helped me out and now i come back to volunteer to help them out."

While the salvation army is glad for the extra help this week - they say they really need help every week. Lewann said," You can give an hour, you can give ten minutes. Volunteering to give back to somebody is a big help."

It's especially important now. The East Stroudsburg Salvation Army has about 20 more families to feed this month than it did last month. And the numbers seem to rise constantly.

Lewann said the organization especially needs volunteers who are strong and can lift heavy boxes.

Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania says 5,000 employees will donate 19,000 hours of time this week. The work time is valued at more than $350,000.
