SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - The final preparations are underway for a big annual event in downtown Scranton. Organizers of First Night Scranton 2010 say they could still use a lot of volunteers.

On a day when many people had snow and slush on the minds, party planners want people to start thinking about the celebration. Co-Chair Andrea Talarico has just unveiled this year's theme.

"It is Scranton Under the Big Top this year. We went with a circus theme so we have Zany Umbrella Circus from Pittsburgh coming in. They're a fantastic circus troop," Talarico said.

First Night Scranton is an alcohol-free, family friendly event which features music, performances and fireworks.

"The aim is that you can bring your child out with you and have them cross the street with you and feel safe," Talarico said.

Organizers say the volunteers they still need with be instrumental in putting the night together. They are the crux of making sure everything works out.

"We have 20 venues, 15 of which we could still use more volunteers at, so we'd love to hear from whoever is interested," volunteer coordinator Jennifer Edsell said.

Anyone who wants to attend First Night Scranton 2010 needs a button. The buttons only cost $10 if you buy them from now until Christmas. One of the new things this year will be that senior citizens can get in free.

"Seniors over 65 are free this year. We really wanted to get them out and include them in the entertainment," Talarico said.

Upwards of 10,000 people typically turn out for First Night Scranton events and organizers say you don't have to worry about the changing weather situation.

"We're lucky because all of our venues this year are indoors except for the Main Stage," Edsell said. "Essentially we go on rain or shine."

First Night buttons are available at all Gerrity's Supermarkets and the Mall at Steamtown.
